MAKING A BATTERY
Project Summary
Batteries produce electricity for powering electrical devices. A voltaic pile was the first electrical battery discovered by Alessandro Volta. It uses two types of metal stacked in alternating layers and an electrolyte solution to produce electricity.
In this experiment we use two coins (nickels and pennies) and a salt-vinegar solution to create a voltaic pile battery. The coins are stacked in alternating layers between paper soaked in the salt vinegar solution. A multimeter is used to measure the amount of electricity produced (in volts). The more coins we use, the more electricity is produced.
